Repurposing Old Curtains
Moving from house to house usually means having to leave behind or donate all the curtains from your last home. The windows in our new house were all just different enough to mean that all of our existing curtains were either too short or not wide enough. Having just purchased curtains six months before moving out of our last house, I hated the idea of all that drapery going to waste.
Here's a picture of the curtains in our last home:
When we moved into our house they were way too short, so we had to get creative. We decided to continue with the stripes from the rug and add some horizontal panels to increase the length.
Here's a quick rundown of the steps necessary. The first thing we did was determine exactly how we wanted the stripes on the curtain. We wanted them to be 8 inches, 12 inches, and 18 inches wide. Next we marked the lines on the curtain and started to cut it into several pieces.
After we had our new strips cut at the correct sizes, we placed them in the correct order inside the curtain.
We made the width of the new fabric longer on the sides so we had room to fold the fabric over for the hem. All that's left is sewing all of the panels together, and you're done!
Here's a picture of the final product. Good luck!
